it is impressive to present oneself as the only scientist of this forum and not to recognize a 3rd degree equation !!

1 + f + f ^ 2 = 1 / (1-f) is not equivalent to a: (1-f) x (1 + f + f ^ 2) - 1 = 0 !! (either a + bx + cx ^ 2 + dx ^ 3 = 0)?
I gave the solutions without knowing anything about the climate!

oh there I wrote that last night I was not awake sorry, I wanted to write 1 + f + f ^ 2 + ... with three small dots to indicate that it is an infinite series (in fact it is necessary continue the sum + f ^ 3 + f ^ 4 etc ..., it would be necessary to write a sum of 0 to infinity but without a Latex type text editor it is not easy). There is an infinite sum because each feedback triggers another which triggers another one etc ... but each one diminished by a factor f. You have to f <1 otherwise it deviates catastrophically and this is where we have a runaway (but for the climate I reassure you we have af <1);

the sum of a geometric series, we studied that in high school in my time ...

PS if you limit yourself to a finite number of terms as in the equation you wrote, the only solution is f = 0. there is also no need to use Cardan's formula, because we can easily factorize the f and there remains a quadratic equation which has no solution, so only f = 0 works.

You should not venture into areas that you obviously only master very roughly ...

obviously for the greatest scientist of the forum you are very very approximate!

very approximate because I wrote 1 + f + f ^ 2 instead of 1 + f + f ^ 2 + ...? yeah .. sorry ... i shouldn't go into these details ... but feel free to ask if you don't understand i can explain again :).
