Floods May 2016: Germany, Belgium and France under water

Humanitarian catastrophes (including resource wars and conflicts), natural, climate and industrial (except nuclear or oil forum fossil and nuclear energy). Pollution of the sea and oceans.

I also had the idea of these active turbines to accelerate the flow in the event of a flood ... but the investment would be monstrous because it would be necessary to pump over 500km long ... it would cost billions of euros but it could be profitable to save the capital because the estimated cost of the XNUMX-year flood would be tens of billions of euros for France.

However, there is already a plan to save Paris and it is cheaper: river shedding = flooding the surrounding departments ... This is a bit what is happening at the moment ...

Floods are not only linked to the capricious weather but also to urbanization, the macadam is waterproof ... it is obvious but it is useful to remember ...

Yes the Seine has exceeded 5m this morning ... and continues to rise, a "peak" at 5.5m is scheduled for next night: http://www.lemonde.fr/planete/article/2 ... _3244.html

it would be expensive and difficult to justify if it only served that ... but if it is used for the rest of the year to produce electricity it is a dual-use investment

Blocked by the floods, two robbers try to swim away Image

They thought they could escape from the police by fleeing by swimming. Two men were picked up quietly by the BAC after having robbed a supermarket in the Loiret.

Extraordinary scene this Wednesday noon in the town of Fleury-les-Aubrais (Loiret). Shortly after 13 p.m., two men robbed the city supermarket before fleeing by car.

Chased by two bikers of the national police, the two suspects had to precipitately leave their car on a national road, become impassable because of the heavy rains which fell in recent days.

The two men then decided to swim away to reach the other “bank” of the road, where a crew of the local anti-crime brigade dispatched to the scene patiently awaited them.

Placed in police custody
The two robber swimmers were taken into custody for theft with a weapon.

there is a big difference between a tidal turbine and a turbine in a dam!

a tidal turbine under the sea, water can bypass the tidal turbine: it is therefore subject to the betz limit ... even if the tidal turbine has a yield of 100% it only captures part of the energy passing ... and in pumping use it is not better, if it tries to push the water it comes back upside down on each side

a real turbine well placed in a dam is much more efficient than a tidal turbine ... as much for producing electricity as for pumping

Think about what you just said: you want to make dams, so buildings that go A LOT up the average level of a river, to limit flooding? Not very logical ... eh!

In this case, even if you put 1 MW in each turbine, the average level upstream would, by design, always be higher than if there were no dam!

No there is no photo, the solution of river turbines seems better to me!

if the turbines of a dam pump the upstream level is lower than the downstream level

if several dams pump it increases the slope in each reach so increases the flow

Except that a dam, structurally, is not dimensioned so that the downstream level is greater than the upstream level ... obviously we could imagine the size but this would cost roughly at least twice the volume of concrete. ..for a very occasional and punctual use! And if you raise the level of the water side, must be sure that it does not create an overflow off riverbanks downstream, otherwise the dam is strictly for nothing :)

I think that reversible tidal turbines are a better idea ... but expensive too ...
