Attacks against Operation Sentinel soldiers
In October 2017, there were six attacks against soldiers from Operation Sentinel15[insufficient source]:

On February 3, 2015, a man attacked and wounded with a knife two soldiers from the 54th Hyères artillery regiment on duty in front of a Jewish community center in Nice23. He is immobilized and arrested by a third soldier. These three soldiers were rewarded the following day with the Medal of Honor for acts of courage and dedication, gold level, awarded by the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes24. A 30-year-old man, Moussa Coulibaly, from Mantes-la-Jolie (Yvelines), was arrested23. As of February 13, 2015, the command recorded 371 incidents against the military, including “reconnaissance, shots or films” and “14 serious attacks, whether with a knife, laser, or even blows with the butt”6,25.

On January 1, 2016, Raouf El Ayeb, a 29-year-old Frenchman of Tunisian origin drove his vehicle three times into soldiers from the Sentinel system in front of the Valence mosque. After giving the usual warnings, the soldiers opened fire and overpowered the terrorist. He declares “Having wanted to attack the soldiers because they symbolize in [his] eyes the action of France against the Islamic State” and claims “clearly a terrorist act”26.

On August 5, 2017, in Paris, around 23:20 p.m., an 18-year-old man of Mauritanian origin tried to enter the Eiffel Tower armed with a knife. After shoving a security guard, he walked through a gate and pulled out a knife, shouting “Allahu Akbar”. Soldiers from Operation Sentinel then ordered him to put his weapon on the ground: he immediately complied and was arrested without putting up any resistance. Placed in police custody, the man claimed responsibility for his action during the interrogations, specifying that he intended to attack a soldier29.

On August 9, 2017, at 7:57 a.m., in Levallois-Perret, an individual driving a car drove into an Operation Sentinel patrol, injuring 6 soldiers, including 3 seriously30.

After the shooting of December 11, 2018 in Strasbourg, the terrorist meets a patrol of the sentry operation and opens fire. The patrol retaliates and wounds the terrorist who nevertheless manages to flee. He was finally neutralized two days later by a public security patrol31. A Sentinel soldier was very slightly wounded in the hand by the ricochet of a shot from the assailant32.
