USA: the double punishment of the survivors of September 11

Twenty years later, the survivors of the World Trade Center attacks remain deeply marked by their experiences. Spotlight on these forgotten people of the tragedy who fought to avoid sinking completely.

Firefighter on September 11, 2001, Richard Roeill did not count his hours when he took part in rescue and clearing operations. But the toxic dust that he swallowed that day and the following took a toll on his health. His life expectancy does not exceed three years according to his doctors. He goes twice a week in consultation to have his blood cleaned of heavy metals that handicap his daily life. But the financial assistance he received and his mutual health insurance do not allow him to cover all the expenses.

Twenty years later, Scott Bartels still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. It is still impossible for this former repairman of heating appliances to return to the scene of the tragedy. Seeing an airplane in the sky reminds him of horror. A shame when he lives seven kilometers as the crow flies from John Fitzgerald Kennedy Airport. Refusing to move so as not to leave in addition "to the terrorists the care of dictating to him where he should live", he has been undergoing psychotherapy for four years and says he hopes for more favorable days to come.

Many are the victims who, like Scott and Richard, found themselves alone to face their demons or their health problems. If they have found the strength to lead this fight, it is because they have sometimes united in order to finally make their voices heard. Some testify for the first time. Meet.
