Work Stress: A report to better identify psychosocial risks

(AFP) - 22 hours ago

PARIS - A series of national surveys carried out in recent years reveals the importance of stress at work, which can even double the risk of certain diseases, according to a report submitted to the government proposing 40 indicators to better identify "psychosocial" risks .

The authors of this report requested by the Minister of Labor-twenty sociologists, doctors, psychiatrists, statisticians, economists-rely on scientific studies and several national surveys conducted in 2003, 2005 and 2007 among employees.

According to this provisional report delivered in October, and of which AFP had a copy on Saturday, psychosocial risks (stress, depression, etc.) can lead to "an increase" in the risk of cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems and musculoskeletal disorders "up to 50% to 100%". The final version of the study is scheduled for fall 2010.

Responsible for "formulating proposals for a statistical monitoring of psychosocial risks at work", the panel of experts, bringing together in particular Philippe Askénazy (research director at the CNRS), Christian Baudelot (sociologist) or Chantal Cases (statistician-economist and director of INED), has determined forty "provisional indicators".

"Each of these indicators is relevant, but they do not yet give an exhaustive and synthetic view of psychosocial risks at work," warns Michel Gollac, sociologist and administrator of INSEE, who chairs the panel of experts.

Based on the 2003 Sumer survey on occupational health surveillance, the 2005 Work Conditions Survey of the DARES (Ministry of Labor) and the 2007 Health and Occupational Trails Survey (SIP), the report ranks indicators in six categories: work demands, emotional burden, autonomy and flexibility, social and labor relations, value conflicts and socio-economic insecurity.
