The confectionery union, which brings together 97% of industry in the sector, published on June 19 its new charter of engagement. On the menu: sweets that are less sweet and free from titanium dioxide.

After Lutti, Verquin or Haribo, it is now 100% of confectioners who undertake to dispense with the additive E171 in the manufacture of their candies.

Since 2017, this product has been at the heart of a controversy after INRA has demonstrated the carcinogenic risks of exposure to nanoparticles of titanium dioxide contained in this dye. Last May, Brune Poirson, Secretary of State to the Minister for the Ecological Transition, announced the government's wish to remove the additive from all revenues.

Used by confectioners to whiten and intensify the shine of their candies, E171 has already been abandoned by more than 90% of confectioners according to their union. Through their new charter of engagement, the professionals of the sector are determined to move up a gear.
