WASHINGTON - A document detailing the free trade negotiations between the United States and eight Asia-Pacific countries was leaked in the morning of Wednesday, June 13. The disproportionate powers which would be granted to multinational firms under the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) contradict important election promises made by Barack Obama.

But the multinationals did not already have excessive powers (lobbying)?

Foreign firms in the US may challenge US laws

The TPP aims to relax a large number of national investment laws, which worries environmentalists, unions and supporters of financial system reform.

If this free trade treaty is adopted, US companies will continue to comply with US environmental, labor and financial laws. On the other hand, foreign firms operating in the United States may challenge these same laws before international courts. These courts will have the power to strike them down and impose economic sanctions in the United States for non-compliance with their decisions.
