Sharpening steel drill bits

by the middle » 28/10/08, 12:35

Hello,
When you're good, sharpening a steel drill bit or a chainsaw chain with your eyes is no problem.
It's not my case.
For my chainsaw chain, I have the tool.
But for my blunt steel bits, I have nothing.
Lately, I have been in a specialized store which offers me a sharpener for wicks at 300 euros : Shock:
In super markets, there is equipment to adapt on its drill ...
It's valid? ; have you ever tried this stuff?

Hello

Sharpening a forest does not consist in recreating a cone on the part supposed to cut.
Unfortunately, this is the case with low-end equipment, which simply makes a dull forest look sharper.
Consult the attached link to get an idea of the operations of sharpening by a machine worthy of the name.

I bought a long time ago a small device which you are talking about mounting with a drill and which turns a mini grinding wheel.
it just gives you the right angles but I didn't find it terrible especially because we don't see what we're doing.
so I sharpen them with the grinder to grind with the eye and it goes well.
the only really difficult thing is to have two cutting lips of the same length. So in general they are not. result, the center of rotation is slightly offset and the hole made is ... slightly larger than the diameter of the drill bit.

There are perforated wheels that allow you to see through and see exactly the action of grinding on the drill.
