... and not just plates: pots, pans, dishes ...
So don't laugh while reading the title: I'm very serious! (well, I believe...).
I start from the following thesis: a lot of food is wasted by remaining "stuck" to the plate, especially with dishes in sauce.
The generation born before the 2nd world war a / used to wipe their plates systematically with bread (especially in the countryside), it was not for nothing: they knew (still) the value of food (and the price of hunger)!
The economic gain from this lost habit is currently at least threefold:
a) less food waste
b) easier to do dishes: saving detergent and less dirt in the sink / siphon
c) eating bread is eating a simple food with low processing, often local and therefore with low ecological impact
So crazy idea or not? The debate has begun...
ps: Remundo APEAP does that suit you?

Besides it makes you eat bread, my uncle screams when he sees us eating meat without bread.
Otherwise if there is no bread there is only the language it works well should not be at the restaurant or at his mother.
Gain dishwashing liquid too, I see my girlfriend's plate and mine ...
But I'm starting to tip it on the right side.

Ah well I see that the "concept" already has its followers!
Arnaud, you confirm what I put in the first message:
Otherwise I'm not sure that wiping with bread is seen in restaurants: I'm not enough specialist in "politeness" ...
ps: hiihihhi "at his mother's house", it looks like we have the same ...

Bad!
You can always wipe at MacMachin and nobody will blame you!
I do not force too much on the bread which makes you fat considering the amount of fat in the bread!
My charming animals take care of the lichette and they patiently await the end of the meal every evening!

I was born after the war in the countryside (1946), I always had this habit,
I don't know when or how it came.
One of my uncles used to say: "a day without bread is a day without sun"
I especially hate eating dry bread, so the sauce replaces the butter;
What good is it to make dishes in sauce if it is put in the trash.
I also hate wasted food.
When there are potatoes, I mash them to absorb the sauce.
With rice or pasta I stir well to get as much as possible,
it's a little redneck but it's so good.

My grandmother was offended not to see us eating "enough" bread at the table ...
I'm actually a pretty big eater of bread ...
Otherwise, the same grandmother did the dishes in boiling water, without products.
The wiping was almost automatic, the water evaporating very quickly from the dishes removed from the basin.
The dishwater was not thrown away and was used as broth to cook the pig's meal in the pot hanging in the fireplace which served as heating.
In short, that of good economic sense before the time, I have to hold.
