For example above: orally of course
simple misspelling... or distraction but whose meaning is totally different too.
But it is a whole, not one without the other. Except that the young child learns to speak phonetically (imitation of adults with their own deformations of language, words, and their syntax) depending on when such and such rules change according to the mood of the decision-makers, not always logical . and where depending on the country and language the rules in question will not be the same
for example a small exercise in logic and grammar/ortho
"A fool carrying a bucket in a bucket jumped. How much ??? SO ...is there?"How do you write this last SO, according to which rules? whereas orally it poses no difficulty.
I understand your point of view. Except that grammar like ll'heauteaugrafe are taught to small children, not to well-conditioned adults and the sense of logic and illogicality is not part of their concepts when these two subjects are taught to them, so cramming for the of them. No: spelling is memory, grammar is logic... a grammatical error is more serious for written comprehension than a spelling error... small grammatical errors (like that of Science et Vie) do not get along although, when one speaks well, one does not pronounce hidden in the same way as hidden...
Do you understand?

for example a small exercise in logic and grammar/ortho
"A fool carrying a seal in a bucket, jumped up. How many ??? SO... are there?" how do you write this last SO, according to which rules? whereas orally it poses no difficulty.

Yes and so ? None of these words have the same root... normal that they are spelled differently.

What says Janic, is that although these words do not have the same meaning, that their roots are different, it does not however pose any problem of oral comprehension... troubling, no? They are dyed-in-the-wool homophones and then that's all...
A friend was in favor of a phonetic spelling of French: it would have simplified the life of schoolchildren (and others), but would have made everything that had been previously written unreadable, except laborious and approximate translation (hello puns* !). You still have to admit that the spelling is complex, not necessarily justified and that the grammar has a tortuous logic within which there are sometimes more exceptions than the rule!
* I sometimes do it orally and usually no one understands if I don't insist heavily (well, that won't surprise you!)...

Well... so... A bucket can hold a bucket or a fool if it's big enough, and a bucket can hold a bucket and/or a fool... that's fool, right?
