I missed the suicide of a German minister : Shock: (good check made it is not the federal minister, but that of a "Land", Hesse, but all the same ... the Land of Frankfurt, the 4th financial center in Europe!)

Christophe wrote:. "The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on mental health may be profound," worry the authors. "There is a real risk that the suicide rate will increase."

It is certain that it seriously affected the mental health of some .... But the most seriously affected cling to life and obviously do not have a suicidal tendency ...

About the future, each of us has an opinion, at least an intuition. An often unequal blend of fears and hopes, certainties and doubts. The spectrum of possible attitudes is very wide. At its ends, two visions are opposed. On the one hand, the prospect of an at least partial disappearance of life. On the other, the possibility of a significantly better life for each and everyone.

These two visions of the future very quickly appeared during the health crisis, at the end of the staggering period. Some French people thought that the world was going to be turned upside down, the country ravaged and ruined. They imagined a plot hatched by the Chinese, a vengeance of nature or a divine punishment ... and stockpiled food. Others focused on the “after”, envisaging a joyous release from confinement and a rapid return to normal, followed by beneficial transformations,… and they refused to wear a mask. All the others have chosen shades of gray on this scale going from black to white.

The party of worry…

On the dark side of anticipation, we find pessimists, declineists or, more recently, "collapsologists [1]". The latter consider that the world is inevitably going to its loss. Their argument is simple: due to human activity, the environment is degrading at high speed, as evidenced by global warming and many other dramatic changes, described by experts and perceptible by people. Living species are threatened, some are already on the verge of extinction. Among them, the human species.

Another reason for concern is the projected increase in the world's population (by around one billion by 2030). How to manage the foreseeable influx of immigrants from countries in difficulty towards those who will be (still) wealthy? These worried people also do not forget the other threats: food, economic, social, security, political, technological ... But it is obviously health threats that are now at the forefront of their concerns.

For the followers of the theory of collapse, the progress of science and its applications (outside the medical field) do not represent a solution, but an additional danger, a headlong rush. The developments in artificial intelligence, the generalization of robots, the manipulation of the genome or the emergence of transhumanism will, according to them, lead to the end of the world, or at least that of life. They add to their list the increase in inequalities, the powerlessness of policies, the weaknesses of democracies, the difficulty of citizens to live together. They prepare to survive by barricading themselves in bunkers filled with food supplies, sometimes weapons and ammunition.

… Or the bet of hope

Optimists (or oblivious, from the point of view of pessimists ...) take a completely different look at the future. They see the world in positive, recognize the progress made in health, education, labor law, income, comfort or entertainment. They are pleased that Europe (at least that of the Union, which has freed itself from its former borders) has ensured peace on its territory for more than seventy years, and that it has favored development of its members. But they worry that some will seek to restore and close them.

They trust science and the accelerated innovation it produces, and believe that it will be able to meet the challenges of the future. They rely on individual and collective intelligence, see globalization as a useful means of bringing people together, through the convergence of cultures and lifestyles and in the context of a cooperative that is now necessary. They believe that conscience, solidarity and the spirit of responsibility will have the power to reverse trends, or at least to curb the movements heralding a decline.

Pollution: containment every year to achieve climate objectives

A study published this Tuesday in "Nature Climate Change" gives the precise assessment of containment. From January 1 to April 30, the shutdown of the economy led to an 8,6% drop in global CO2 emissions. The drop is even more marked in France.
