Wind power on the rise in India

By September 2005, India is expected to have the largest wind farm in Asia at Sankaneri in the state of Tamil Nadu. 900 turbines, with a planned total output of 500 MW, will be installed at an altitude of 1150 m on the Sahyadri hills. The Indian company Suzlon Energy Ltd has developed and produced a turbine 80 m high with a diameter of 88 m and a production capacity of 2 MW constituting the largest turbine outside of Europe. With more than 3500 MW, India is the world's fifth largest producer of wind power.
