In 2003, more than 15 billion plastic bags were distributed in France. On a recurring basis, in the name of environmental protection, it is proposed to reduce the number of bags distributed or even to eliminate their use altogether. The results of some experiments are encouraging: for example, in Ireland, the use of checkout bags fell by 90% thanks to a levy of 15
euro cents per bag in March 2002.
