Evaluation of CO2 emissions related to the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgian GP) (16 September 2007) by Pierre Ozer. Department of Science and Environmental Management. University of Liege.

Introduction

This study was conducted with the aim of estimating the CO2 emissions issued during the Belgian 1 Championship event which will take place on September 16 2007 at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

It remains totally factual and does not wish to argue about the merits of the organization of the Grand Prix.

To our knowledge, never before has a similar study been carried out either for the Belgian Grand Prix or for other Formula 1 Grand Prix. It would seem risky to us to generalize the results obtained for this Grand Prix to the 16 other Grand Prix. Prize for the 2007 season, as the characteristics of each Grand Prix are different, particularly with regard to the logistics implemented for certain events such as those taking place in Australia, Asia or the American continent (massive and distant transport by plane, including automobiles, etc.).

Unlike most “environmental” studies which look like black boxes or are classified as “Top secret” because they contain “sensitive elements”, we fully play with transparency. Thus, all our sources are indicated, as well as all our working hypotheses, as well as all the details of our calculations.
