It is often unknown that a much more serious crisis occurred at the end of the Permian period, 250 million years ago. It was the most spectacular extinction in the history of our planet. For many scientists, it is the very principle of life on Earth that has almost been questioned. Until now, despite years of excavations, no one had been able to explain the causes of this catas-trophe. But geologists have recently issued new hypotheses paving the way for the chain climate catastrophe by releasing methane hydrates.

A lesson for our near future?
