For more than a century, the tendency in industrialized countries to link economic health with the production of greenhouse gases. Since the industrial revolution, a perfect correlation between CO2 emissions and global or regional growth, valid upward or downward, has been demonstrated.
We have also seen this acutely during several global crises. Thus, in 1929, the rate of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere fell during the Great Depression when world GDP contracted by around 20%. It also fell during World War II, during the oil shocks of 2 and 1974 and during the Gulf War in 1979.
