On the initiative of the President of the Republic, an international conference "Biodiversity: Science and Governance" was held in Paris. The report made by scientists is alarming. As our President Hubert Reeves says: "Today we are eliminating more than a thousand times more species than before the industrial era. This massive extinction, the sixth in the history of the earth, humanity is the cause, it could be the victim.
A challenge is to be met and we believe that the elected representatives, in Parliament of course, but also in the Regions, the Departments, the Communes-strong of their democratic legitimacy-are in a position to impel the impetus necessary to correct the situation.
Convinced that they will have the will to take up such a challenge which, beyond the present generations, concerns those who will take over, we are sending them a solemn appeal *. Hubert Reeves wrote the introduction, and the call is accompanied by both the presentation of the main principles for a renovation of the natural heritage policy and our main proposals for the national biodiversity strategy.
The ROC League intends in this way to help ensure that the fine objective of the conference "Deciding today to live tomorrow" is translated into action. This first initiative will, of course, be followed by others ...
