Global energy intensity is decreasing

Energy intensity, the quantity of energy required to produce one unit of GDP, has fallen by 1,5% on average worldwide since 1990. Very strong energy intensity disparities remain: it is 25% lower than the average. world average for Japan, Western Europe, Latin America, and South Asia, but 40% higher for North America and Oceania. China, which had the highest level of energy intensity in 1980, has seen its energy intensity drop four times faster than the rest of the world: it is now in the world average. These are some of the conclusions of a study on the energy policies of 63 countries around the world carried out by Ademe within the framework of the World Energy Council. The study “Energy efficiency policies and indicators in the world” assesses the effectiveness of the various energy policy measures taken in these 63 countries.
