Drought in the Amazon: fire in Bolivia and little navigable Amazon in Peru

LIMA, Monday 19 September 2005

A gigantic fire, which has already destroyed between 80.000 and 100.000 hectares of forest, is devastating the Bolivian Amazon. This is one of the consequences of a severe drought, which has raged for several weeks and which, in Peru, has brought the Amazon River to its lowest level in at least 30 years, limiting its navigability.
